PPP wants to prevent clash of institutions: PMSupremacy of Parliament to be maintained
Salim AhmedLahore—A special meeting of the federal cabinet will be called shortly in which various proposals to effectively resolve the energy crisis will be discussed with all stakeholders.Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani stated this while addressing MNAs, MPAs and office bearers of the Pakistan People’s Party here at the State Guest House on Saturday. “The coalition government is determined to resolve all issues facing the country today, with priority to those directly affecting the common man”, Gilani said. Talking about the restoration of deposed judges, the premier said that the Pakistan People’s Party is committed to the restoration of the deposed judges like the PML-N. “Our objective is the same, but we differ on the modalities,” he added. He recalled that his party offered most sacrifices for the cause of democracy and in the movement aimed at restoration of the judiciary, with the party’s lawyers and workers even laying down their lives for the cause. He said he wants freedom of judiciary and resolution of issue concerning judges reinstatement in an amicable and positive way.Paying tributes to the PPP’s founder-Chairman Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, Gilani said: “PPP is the party that gave the country its constitution and we will ensure its protection”. He also praised the leadership of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Co-Chairperson Asif Ali Zardari and said the PPP is a truly democratic party. Talking about federally administered tribal areas (FATA), he said that the people of FATA are looking to the new civilian government with hope and we will resolve their problems and outstanding issues through understanding and negotiation. The premier also vowed to protect the constitution and respect the people’s mandate given to the present government under the 1973 constitution. He reiterated that PPP wants to prevent any clash of interests among the top institutions of the country.Responding to a question about the coalition prospects, he said PML-N Chief Mian Nawaz Sharif has also struggled and sacrificed for the cause of democracy and is sincerely committed to pulling the country out of the multiple crises confronting the nation.Prime Minister Gilani said the government’s main objectives are supremacy of the parliament, revival of the Constitution, restoration of judiciary, solution of unemployment problem and energy crisis, improvement of law and order and strengthening of economy.The Prime Minister said that the government had been formed with coalition of parties who had won the public mandate and together “we will address the serious crises faced by the country.” He said his government desires good relations with all neighbouring countries and seeks robust trade and cultural relations with India, while resolution of the Kashmir issue remains a high priority. Addressing a news conference in Lahore Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said PML-N Quaid Mian Nawaz Sharif is our partner and will not sit on opposition benches as we have to steer the country out of crises. The Prime Minister said that Parliament will decide the future of the President. He said US has no concern with the restoration of judiciary, it wants cooperation in war against terrorism and extremism.Yousuf Raza Gilani said that there are minor differences on the modalities for the restoration of judges between the two partners which will be resolved very soon. The Prime Minister said, there is no proposal regarding two Supreme Courts or two Chief Justices under consideration and the promise made to the nation on restoration of judges and independent judiciary would be fulfilled at every cost.Earlier Chief Minister Punjab Dost Mohammad Khosa called on Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani at the State Guest House here on Saturday. According to official sources, they exchanged views on current issues such as price hike, wheat situation, power shortage, important political issues as well as law and order in the province.Governor Punjab also called on the PM and highlighted various achievements under the Education Sector Reforms (ESR) programme in the province under which new universities have been opened and several other measures taken to improve standard of education.Governor Khalid Maqbool also briefed the Premier about the progress of major development projects pertaining to infrastructure development under the local governments over the last few years in Punjab.
