Tripping of transmission lines was a ‘National Disaster’: Kaira

ISLAMABAD:Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Qamar Zaman Kaira has said that tripping in the transmission lines which suspended electricity for hours in Karachi, was a National disaster.
While speaking in a private TV Channel program, Qamar Zaman Kaira has cleared that though he was not favoring KESC, however, tripping in transmission lines was “rather an exceptional case”, and a major National disaster, which also affected other areas of Sindh. He said that even developed nation of the world sometimes have to confront with same situation. Kaira further said that previous government and not the incumbents privatized KESC, with the consent of Center and province. However, President and Prime Minister during their visit to Karachi had summoned the management of KESC and issued them last warnings for the improvement in the system for more power generation; “otherwise government would be compelled to take any step against KESC management, “ he added. He said that President Asif Ali Zardari during his meeting with KESC Management had also expressed his strong resentment, at which KESC had assured government to inject $380 million for the improvement of the system.
Similarly, he said that the decision of privatization of KESC was in accordance with the policy and it was not based on hypocrisy; but it did not yield proper results. He further said that government was providing Karachi with 700MW electricity although it had no agreement with it but was just supporting the system. Kaira assured that government would soon overcome the issue; however,” it takes time for setting up new units”.
