Barrister Kamal Azfar, representing the federation, made these remarks before the 17-judge bench of the Supreme Court.

Barrister Azfar was elaborating on a statement filed by the federation which hinted at the destabilisation of Pakistan.

The Supreme Court bench grilled the federation lawyer for an hour insisting to identity the forces that were trying to destabilize Pakistan. Barrister Azfar named the American spy agency CIA and the General Headquarters (GHQ) of the Pakistan Army.

‘We would not tolerate such kind of allegations which have consequential repercussions; we have all struggled for democracy; if secretary of law has done it, he should satisfy the court,’ said Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry.

‘We are concerned with democracy as the whole nation is; we are not going to derail the system,’ the Chief Justice said.

Kamal Azfar said that he had drafted the plea himself and that he was making the statement in his personal capacity.

The Chief Justice asked the Acting Attorney General to clarify the matter.

AAG Shah Khawar said that Kamal Azfar’s statement was his personal view. He said the federation’s stance over the matter was already candidly submitted by him and would further apprise the bench after seeking instructions from the federation over this issue.

Kamal Azfar requested the bench for deletion of the paras in question contained in the plea.
